ted.com

TED (technology entertainment and design) is a global set of conferences curated by the american private non-profit sapling foundationand formed to spread "ideas woth spreading". it first took place 1984 and became an annuall conferece since 1990. on ted.com you can find interessting letures/videos to almost every topic. here is a very nice one about moving sculptures by arthur ganson.



ted is worth having a closer look at, but be careful: you could spend a day or two doing nothing else =)

r.'s marble cake

my boyfriend makes a wonderful marble cake! it is best if it is hot and still a bit moisty (just take it out of the oven a few minutes before it gets dry/ready.) the recipy is based on a very simple cake (just take the first three/four ingredients and you have a cake that you can vary as you like).


         ingredients:
  • 1.5 glasses of sugar
  • 1 glass of oil/or butter (make sure the oil hast NO tast, otherwise you will have a sunflower cake, like we had once, hihi)
  • 2 glasses of self-raising flour (if you only have normal flour, add two small spoons of baking powder)
  • 3 freedom eggs
  • 1 glass of milk
  • 2 bars of dark chocolat
  • 100 g of pecans or walnuts (optional)
  • 1/2 glass of coffee (can be instant coffee)
    • 1 cork of vanilla sauce for baking (or just a small spoon of vanilla powder)
    • 1-2 spoons of cacao

      -first heat the oven to 180°C

      -then mix the sugar, the oil and the eggs and prepare 1/2 a glass of coffee (without sugar and milk…), put the vanilla in it.

      -mix the flour and the coffee with the eggs mixture.  

      -melt 1 chocolate bar in 1 glass of milk on a small flame. when it is melted use the cacao to make it thicker.  

      -mix 1/3 a glass of the eggs mixture with the melted chocolate.


        -pour half of the eggs mixture in a cake pan and half of the chocolate mixture in a straight line into it.
        then put the rest of the eggs mixture into the cake pan and add the remaining chocolate mixture (in a strait line).
        Make wave patterns (meander) in your cake with a big fork to create the marble like  pattern.


        optional:
        grind 1 chocolate bar with the nuts and put it on top of the mixture in the baking dish.

        bake for 20 minutes and then check with a toothpick or a fork in the middle of the cake, if it does not come out clean it’s not ready. give it a couple of minutes. remember that it is best if it is a bit moisty.

        create your own virual yak =)

        by creating your own virtual yak you donat a small amount of money to free tibet, you are helping to expose forced nomadic resettlement in tibet, which is taking hundreds of thousands of nomads off the land, depriving them of their sustainable lifestyle as their yaks are confiscated and often slaughtered.
        i think it is a very cute idea to do something good.

        the fisherman and the businessman


        There was once a businessman who was sitting by the beach in a small Brazilian village.
        As he sat, he saw a Brazilian fisherman rowing a small boat towards the shore having caught quite few big fish.
        The businessman was impressed and asked the fisherman, “How long does it take you to catch so many fish?”
        The fisherman replied, “Oh, just a short while.”
        “Then why don’t you stay longer at sea and catch even more?” The businessman was astonished.
        “This is enough to feed my whole family,” the fisherman said.
        The businessman then asked, “So, what do you do for the rest of the day?”
        The fisherman replied, “Well, I usually wake up early in the morning, go out to sea and catch a few fish, then go back and play with my kids. In the afternoon, I take a nap with my wife, and evening comes, I join my buddies in the village for a drink — we play guitar, sing and dance throughout the night.”
        The businessman offered a suggestion to the fisherman.
        “I am a PhD in business management. I could help you to become a more successful person. From now on, you should spend more time at sea and try to catch as many fish as possible. When you have saved enough money, you could buy a bigger boat and catch even more fish. Soon you will be able to afford to buy more boats, set up your own company, your own production plant for canned food and distribution network. By then, you will have moved out of this village and to Sao Paulo, where you can set up HQ to manage your other branches.”
        The fisherman continues, “And after that?”
        The businessman laughs heartily, “After that, you can live like a king in your own house, and when the time is right, you can go public and float your shares in the Stock Exchange, and you will be rich.”
        The fisherman asks, “And after that?”
        The businessman says, “After that, you can finally retire, you can move to a house by the fishing village, wake up early in the morning, catch a few fish, then return home to play with kids, have a nice afternoon nap with your wife, and when evening comes, you can join your buddies for a drink, play the guitar, sing and dance throughout the night!”
        The fisherman was puzzled, “Isn’t that what I am doing now?”

        this is a classic brazilian story.

        i came across it on  paulo coelho's blog  and found it very true. we sometimes mess up our priorities in life...

        gibanica

        gibanica is a traditional serbian dish, very simpel and you can vary it as much as you like. i cooked it with a friend once and now i tried it on my own. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gibanica)
         
        you need:
        • 1x créme fraiche
        • 1x cream
        • 2x feta cheese (ca 400g-500g)
        • 200g cheese (i use emmentaler)
        • 2x broccoli
        • 4-5 eggs

         
        • and one pack of pastry leaves (i get them from a turkish shop, yufka/dürüm dough) or flaky pastry

        •  first you cut open the pastry leaves so they can "breath".
        • then you start cutting the broccoli into smal pieces and boil them a bit in water with a bit salt. (make sure you don`t boil them to long because they go into the oven later on.)

        •  now you mix the créme fraiche, creme (just take as much as needed), feta and eggs. you should crumbe the feta and mix everything well.
        • add a bit pepper, just a tiny bit of salt 8the feta is very salty) and some herbs
        •  preparing the casserole:
        lubricate it with oil, butter or some other grease them unfold the parsty leaves very carefully and cover the cassarole with one of them.
        the other leaves ripp apart and crush them in your fist. put tem in the cassarole (it is best if their openings are facing the top, because the feta/cream/egg/... can go inside the crumbled leaves easily.)
        •  if you finished with the pastry leaves you can start to put the broccoli between them.
        • at the end you fill in the feta/cream/egg/... , cover everything with the parts of the pastry leave which are hanging over the edges of the cassarole.
        • and cover it with cheese.

        • it needs ca 45 min at 180°C in the oven.

        road trip en ion-ion


        we met léonie and stephane on the joliff farm. they were wwoofing too and on their way back to france after a long journey with their van (ion-ion). they have a nice blog called road trip en ion-ion about their adventures.
        (it is in frensh though..) they are a lovely couple and they got a cute (little) dog named bobby. he is a special dog and thinks that he was napoleons dog once, so don`t mess with bobby ;-)

        my old school...

        eyesterday my boyfriend and i went to my old school. it is almost 2 years since i was there last time and it changed a lot (they finished the new mensa and the new hall). but acctually everything was exactly like i left it...
        i spend 13 years in this place.  

         


         it is kind of hard for me to explain the concept of my school, so here are some links about the philosophie of the school and anthroposophie in general

        i enjoyed it to be on this school, even if it was hard sometimes. especially the final exame, the abitur.

        global buckets

        tribu london

        tribu is a small shop in london for earrings, pircings and other bodyart or modifications inspired by traditional/tribal jewellery. 

        i found it in camden when i was in london 2008.
         
        they also have an online-shop.

        winter

        winter came quickly for me. in romania we ate outside because the sun was still very strong, it felt more like spring. when i arrived in germany i was surprised by all the snow and the temperatures (around -5°C).
        these photos were taken in dobel.





         i went there to sled with a close friend and her godchild.
        we had a lot of fun together, sledging and building a snowmann.






        even the lakes where frozen (you can barely see the lake on this photo because it is covered with ice and snow.)

        bread

        i always thought making bread is difficult and it might not be worth it, but when we were on the joliff farm we baked our own bread every day. an it tasted very good =)
        the basic recipy is simple and can be varied.

        •  300g flour (we used "650" but you can use any flour you want)          
        • 4 small spoones of sugar
        • 35g yeast (if you use dry yeast, you need to use more)
        • 1 litre of tepid water                                                                                                                     
        1. put the flour and the sugar in a big bowl, crumble the yeast into it, add the water and mix everything. cover the bowl with cloth and leave it for an hour.
        2. after one hour you add the following ingredients and  knead the dough untill you can take it out of the bowl in one piece.                                                                                                        
        • 1 kg flour
        • 400g darker flour (you can use what ever you want, this is just an exemple!)
        • 2 small spoon of salt
        • a bit of oil                                                                                                                                      
        1. after kneading the dough you leave it for another three hours.
        2. knead it again. now it needs another three hours.
        3. at the end you knead it a last time, form four breads (now you can add what ever you want: sunflower seeds, sesame, pumpkin seeds, oat flakes....as you like. you can for example put seeds insted of 400g dark flour.)                                  
        4.  you should bake your bread for at least 45 min. (180°C)        

        we used to start the bread shortly after breakfast and bake it during dinner. four breads are a lot, we were seven people (and baked bread every day). so half of everything should do it =)
